| My friend has a Dell 8200 dimension desktop with windows xp.
Lately he tried to do some XP tweaks but I think he messed up or something. Now when he loads his computer, it takes very long to get to the user list screen and takes long to load the user when you click it. Most programs wont run, and when i tried to use system restore to get his computer back before the tweaks, I got an error msg reading "System restore cannot protect your computer, please restart and try again". I've tried it in safe mode and I got the same error. Please help me out and tell me what I can do.

| | Restart windows and just before the XP screen keep pressing F8. A list of recovery options should appear. Ask him to select Last Known Good Configuration. |

| If this doesn`t work.
Start from XP CD, choose new installation.
Wait a little bit.
It will show you your installation of XP.
Now choose repair (NOT new installation) |

| Last Known Good won't work if you logged on the computer after the problem started. A reinstall should be the last resort.
Take a look in event viewer for any clues.
