my main hard drive has win xp, but when i try to start it does the loading win xp thing and then just restarts, i needed to get on the computer so i put in my old hard drive which has win 98 on it and switched that drive to master drive and it boots just fine in the same computer, and i know the drive with XP is not corrupt because i can still access it when booted on win 98 from the other drive, but i want to use win xp on the main drive, how can i fix it?

Put the drives back with XP as the main drive.  Then boot to safe mode.  Use system properties, advanced, startup and recovery and clear the box next to automatically reboot.  The next time this happens, you'll see the error message.

Chack the main hard drive....check in C:\windows\system32, find the file named "logonui.exe" and move to any different location on the HD.

If that doesn't work then try booting to safe mode in the xp HD.

If you get into safe mode....go the user account config and disable the welcome screen.

Take the drive with xp as master,

the drive with win98 as slave.

Start from the xp CD and go to the recovery console.

Take

bootcfg /rebuild

and if eyerything goes fine, the two drives will be

recognized and a new boot.ini will be build.

Beside this you need Xp on FAT 32 to come from the

win98 HDD to XP.

BOOTCFG won't work.  You are well past the main startup files according to your description of the problem.  Suggest an in place upgrade.  Boot to your CD and start a full install.  A few screens in setup should detect an existing installation.  Choose repair here.
