| I did check FAQ's
I just bought a Linksys WR54G Wireless *G* Router and right now I am only using the 1-2-3-4 LAN ports on the back...
I will be setting up a wireless print station and a laptop soon
My Question in a "NutshellHow do I mod the Linksys settings so that right now I am not broadcasting and wireless transmission for anybody to steal?
I went to "Advanced Wireless" and selected the 2nd option Permit only PCs listed below to access the wireless network
Then...Edit MAC Filter List and did clicked apply.
*Note* When I Edited MAC Filter list, I did not add any MAC addresses...yet.
I also changed the SSID name from Linksys to something less guessable and of course changed my generic "admin" password.
What else can I do to make sure nobody can steal my broadcast bandwidth?
Hoper this all made sense?

| You should be OK. Only the computers with the MAC addresses in the list will be able to access the router.

| I was told that I should enable WEP and make it a 64 bit encryption with a passphrase used on all MAC's on my LAN.
I love the fact that Linksys has 24/7 tech support with under 5 minute hold times...

| Only the computers with the MAC address in the list will be able to access. WEP will be prevent anybody listening in to capture and spoof the MAC address.
Without an IP they won't get in either. You can control access by limiting the number of IP addresses your dishing out from DHCP. OR use a custom subnet mask behind the router with static IP. A subnet mask of 255.255.255.248 will only give you 6 IP addresses and will be difficult to guess.

| If you want security, most definately enable the WEP secure encryption. It uses some algorithmic pass-code to verify only the computers you allow to enter. That should secure you from most anyone except real professional hackers, which probably arent snooping around your neighborhood.

Don't count on this 100%. Open wireless connections make it easier for people to hide themselves these days.
