Hello i was wondering what temperature should a athlon xp 1600+ run at? It does reach 50oc if the room's hot and playing a game. Have not had it over that with the new heatsink. Would using thermal paste cool it down any more? The heatsink has a thermal pad.

Thankyou

Welcome to TweakXP djrock , that is a bit hot, I have a AthlonXP 1800 and it never gets above 39-40. Thermal paste will knock off a few degrees and so will a better heatsink, but most important is having a cooler case. Make sure your case has excellent air flow.

if 50C is rare when its hot and you are under a load...then thats perfectly fine.  If, however, you IDLED at 50C, then there might be a problem.

i agree with everyone, the thing can run at that just fine, the 1900 in the little computer here with few fans runs at about 48 then gets to 50-52 when hot in summer and running hard, i am not worried about it.  BUT if it gets any higher then say 53-4*C then i am cleaning it out, or reving up the fan speed a bit.  at 58-60 this particular 1900 flaked, it worked fine, but it acted a bit flakey at times. i bet if the fan died on the poor thing it would croak, another good reason to have lots better heat sync on it.

the thermal paste replacing the Pad will easily knock off 2-5* celcius, depending on the quality of the original thermal pad, and more importantally the way the user make sure its done right and seated proper after the change.

and the case, getting better flow or more flow in the case is a bigee.  a way to prove that the case flow or case cooling is the bigger issue than the sync or the thermal contact, take the top off the case, and see how much cooler it is sitting in the air.   often the effects of the case are lots more than one would imagine.  so much so i wonder still why i have the stupid case on , and the fan noise  wrrrrrrrrrrrrr

OK, so i am Guessing, but i try hard

DJ rock - get yourself a higher performance CPU cooler (read some online reviews and make your own choice of which one - it's a personal thing) and use some quality thermal paste like arctic silver.

most definately get yourself another case fan (most cases have place for at least one fan at the front and one at the rear - fill them) and if you have place for more, then fill those places.

case airflow is very important.

let me know what you choose and how it goes?

I have a Pentium 4 2.4, what should be an optimal temperature for my CPU?

My system is very stable and have no problems with it, so i guess is working fine.
