Hi

I have Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 installed,   and I cannot play sound and video files, and get an error message when i use Windows Media player

0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

  • Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
  • Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
  • You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.

Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Everything seems fine with Device manager, and all jacks are in there correct
positions. No other program is being used, and i am getting no where with the Troubleshooter.I have downloaded the driver updates from windows Update.

The only thing i can see that might cause a conflict, is the fact that the drivers that came with the Hardware are not digital signed by Microsoft, but they worked fine with XP.

Can anybody help please.

Thanks

Make sure the Windows Audio service is set to automatic and running.

You might also want to use the manufacturer's latest drivers, not Microsofts.

Scared me the first time I ran into it.  Glad to save you a couple of hours of troubleshooting.  Don't know why this is turned off by default.

Could be the wrong drivers for your card.  Try downloading and installing the manufacturer drivers.  Also check to make sure your speakers are plugged in correctly.

well the reasoning is.. you usually dont need all that for a server like directx is turned off.. the sound and all the multimedia stuff. if you are running a server chances are you ain't gonna be playing high end games on it but yeah it is all good

Yeah, I was gonna say the same as peptobismal69: as is the case with DX acceleration, sound is optional on a server.

Open up the Volume controls and check for something called "3D-depth" (not sure of the name, though).  If it's not there, go to Options--Properties and put a check mark next to it if you find it.  Then play around with its slider while the music is playing.
