I don't know what happened!

A few days ago my Tampa Bay Road Runner cable went from 200 kb/s to 30 kb/s downloads, but what's really wierd: every website still loads just as fast or faster than it did when   downloads were at 200 kb/s. I did do a lot of tweaking that day, but it was mainly disabling background programs and services under msconfig and services.msc.

The only thing I can think of is for me to enable every background service and program that is running and hope that speeds the connection back up; then work back from there disabling them all to see which one slows the connection again (that way I'll keep my extra speed from tweaking and also keep my fast internet downloads).

Anyone else think they can help me speed this thing back up?

Not knowing what you turned off or manipulated is a big part of the problem for anyone here to assist but you're on the right track to have associated the change with something you've done.

Usually, folks visiting the Forum have no clue what they've done and then ask us to figure it out!!

Give it a try (restoring your defaults) and if you have continuing problems, get back to us.

Intamin:

Do you by chance use PCcillin as your antivirus?

If so, it has a Web monitoring function that will kill your download speeds.  You just have to uncheck a box.  I am not sure where it is exactly because I don't use PCcillin.  I had a friend with the problem and I diagnosed it for him.

Let us know.

You say you're on cable, so there's a third possibility.  You've been downloading/uploading too much (usually by means of a filesharing program, or even an FTP program if you have big sites to maintain), passing your ISP's maximum bandwidth restrictions.  Most cable ISP's then put you on something they like to call "smallband".  You'll then surf at speeds sometimes slower than that of a 56k dial-up modem until your bandwidth figures are back on track.

When you login to your account on your ISP's site, do they offer some chart view of your transfer figures?
