I hoping for some help (like a guide) for when I do a format.i need some sort of a guide .i have 2 hdd one contains my windows components the other my vast music collection which is why I got the additional hdd,the problem I have encountered is when formatting is I need a guide so when I format I keep my music files on my second hdd & just format my hdd containing my windows components.the reason for this guide I just recently formatted & both drives got formatted loosing my music files .which Is what I wanted to avoid, I takes forever to load back on my music files!

How can I make sure I format the correct hdd?

I boot from the xp to format

Also how can I ensure that windows shows both hdd after format,it only showed 1

thanks

Maybe this can help you (remember for the purposes of a partition or format from the Windows XP CD, your Master drive is referred to as 'Drive 0 (i.e. 'Zero'):

http://www.networkcert.net/xp/install.htm

This link is a Rob Elder (relder) production.

As for your other question, two key steps to start: Hardware installation and recognition (that means IDE & Power cables, drive jumpers set properly, & BIOS recognition as proof of the hardware installation); and, the second part is the software 'preparation' of the drive (a good hardware installation must have occurred first then partitioning and formatting of the drive must occur for Windows to recognize the drive).
