Hello hello,

I use Spybot, Ad-aware, Spywareblaster, disabled unecessary services and used msconfig to disable unecessary startup items.  MY computer boots pretty fast but the one thing that I do have enabled in msconfig is my Verizon internet connection.  However, it takes forever to start once i turn on my computer.  I mean I'll see my desktop icons and everything in about 10-15 seconds but the Verizon takes around 30-45 seconds just to start.  I was just wondering if there's some processes going on in the background that are preventing it from starting instantly.  Is there anyway I can make it start instantly as soon my desktop appears.  MY McAfee used to do that when I had it enabled in msconfig.  As soon as I logged in the VirusScan would start, but the Verizon seems to take a while.  Is there some kind of fix for this?

The reason that this happens isn't Verizon's software but the start type that the RasMan and the TapiServ service (which it is dependent on) are configured as.  Both have a start type of 3.

Services with a start type of 1 load first, then the 2's.  Both are often before the logon screen appears.  Then services with 3 and 4 start types load.  This is defined in the registry under the HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services.

I've never tried this, but you might try changed the type to 2.  You cannot set this to one as it depends on the RPC service to load first.  Make sure you back up the registry first.

I actually used that tweak and it worked.  Verizon loads instantly now as soon as I connect.   Great tweak, and thanks rob...

Hi, Rob:

I primarily use Roadrunner cable, but I have Verizon 56K as backup, so I decided to check the registry on my Windows XP laptop for those 2 registry settings.  Both of mine are already set on 0x00000002(2).

Just a guess because I don't know anything about the Verizon dial up connection, but other ISPs (i.e. Comcast, Roadrunner etc.) have programs that run at startup to check connectivity, check for new hardware and if a NIC was replaced or a modem was replaced it will prompt you to register the new hardware.  If for some reason you can't get an IP it will promt you to call the helpline.  These programs are not necessary to access the internet so you can just disable them from startup.  Mabey Verison is the same way.  Try to disable it and see if you can still access the internet.  If it were my PC and I found I didn't need it, I would remove it.  Just my opinion.
