I have a few things going in the sys tray as you do, but xp desides to automatically hide any unused ones, which i find annoying as you have to click the arrow thing to access one.

How do I disable this from occurring in the registry?

no registry i dont think - just right click on start > Properties > Taskbar > uncheck Hide inactive icons
