| Anyone know about this site/software?
Shoot the Messenger
In any case...the site does seem to have some good explanations on the differences in 'messenger' service which you get asked about on occasion in these forums. Or...are they good explanations? |

| It looks like all this program does is disable the Messenger service. It's very easy to do that yourself.

| Benny, my friend, are you kidding??!! Why should you fool with those guys' unproven freeware when for only $9.95 I'll ask Vector to explain how it's done.
watch out. the technosaur will return soon... but no more of the fake software shuffles. I'm worn out on that joke. Gotta get some new material.

| I hate to see people make money on this, so....
Copy the text in bold into Notepad and safe as "disable messenger.reg".
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Messenger]
"Start"=dword:00000004
Double-click the file to merge it with the Windows Registry. (If you changed the default double-click bahavior of .REG files, right-click the file and select Merge.)
Alternatively, open Regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Messenger, and change the data for "Start" to "4".
Another alternative is to open services.msc, scroll down to "Messenger", right-click it and select "Stop" (if it was started), then right-click it again, choose Properties and select "Disabled" from the drop-down menu in the middle.

| Vector, I never said I would give you the money. I said for only $X that I would ask Vector to explain it. Reminds me of the time this skinny little fellow said he would arm wrestle me for $5. I jumped on the deal. We arm wrestled, he lost, snatched the money and explained that he said nothing about the winner getting the money as his much bigger brother stood behind him grinning. I suspect that he grew up to be a lawyer, his bigger brother a cop and that they're still working the same scam.
Thomas76, as usual your registry entry is excellent, but wouldn't it be easier/better to turn Messenger off in Services where it can easily be restored in the unlikely event it is needed later? (the alternative you listed)
