| Ok, to start things off, i'm pretty much computer illiterate. With that being said, here's my story:
My computer started acting up one day. I tired to log on to AOL and it said something about res://c:/windows/sytem32/docjfafsf.dll or something and i could stay logged on but i could not access any webpages. Now, i have a Dell Inspiron 2600 so it had some system restore option on their. So I used that thinking that I deleted some program that took some .dll file i needed. That didn't work so, me being the impatient marine that I am, instead of shooting my laptop with an m16 I backed up all my important files on CD and attempted to reinstall Windows XP with the disc that came with the laptop.
This is where it gets interesting, the whole reinstallation went without a hitch and, after the computer restarted, a box came up saying "do you want to activate this version of windows now?" I pressed "ok" but it would not do anything, so i pressed no and after the screen went nowhere I pressed "no" and the computer restarted itself. Now, when the computer is turned on, the Windows XP logo comes up and after that dissapears the screen goes completely blank and nothing ever comes up. The keyboard and everything works, but windows will not start at all and i know for a fact that i am not on the DOS. Is my hard drive done for? If anybody can help me on this I would really appreciate it.

| Welcome to TweakXP , how long has it been since you installed XP? You have 30 days to activate XP, also I would not recommend reinstalling AOHELL, it will cause you more problems than you can imagine.

| Do you have an XP disc? At this point you are probably better off reformatting and then reinstalling (from your post above, I can't tell if you reformatted).

| Can you press the F8 key on startup and boot to 'Safe Mode' (for the activation) or has the installation completely crapped out on you?

| I agree with Allan except for the fact that you are completely computer illiterate and might struggle. Maybe you know someone who could assist you. Or maybe someone has a link to a nice simple tutorial for you on doing a clean install of XP.

| what do you mean by reformatting? Do you mean wiping my computer completely clean? How do I do this? Before anything, though, I'm going to try that safe mode thing. thanks for your help.

| Almost same thing happenend to me. I got one answer here that was another question. You are doing better than me. Call your computer manufacturer, I called dell. We tried 4 options before I finally had to do complete reinstall. Not what I wanted but had to. At one point we got Aol back up. I backed up all the info I could on cd. Floppy would not work. Find anything you can, and cpoy it before doing complete reinstall and have a tech walk you through.
Aol didn't crash your computer, that negative stuff is uncalled for. Maybe what you get through your ip does it, but not the ip.
Call someone, they are glad to walk you through it Aol took me step by step to reinstall addy', files, favs. It's a little diferent than the on line instructions. Good luck

And your right bob, aol wasn't the cause they have been pretty good to me.
Again, thanks for everybody's help, I'm sure I'll have another problem soon
