| Just bringing this post over from the orig board since it's very helpful and there are good replies so far
Where does XP store the icon file that goes in the upper right hand corner that shows the Windows Explorer icon? I must have gotten to a website that HIJACKED my original Icon and now their crappy icon appears there. I would like to get rid of it. Thanks.
The replies so far are as follows...

From yoyo:
Does it appear in Explorer or in Internet Explorer?
Look in the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
(maybe also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar)
for entries
SmBrandBitmap and BrandBitmap
after exporting the key (just to be on the safe side) you can delete the entries.
Also scan for virus, spyware and browser hijackers.

Yoyo, the icon I'm talking about is the one that appears in the upper right hand corner for Internet Explorer.
Additional information I now have: The icon is from my Cable internet service provider. I didn't recognize what it was previously.
yoyo, can you tell me what you mean by "exporting the key.."? Thanks. |
