| Recently (within the last 2 months or so), i've been having serious problems with Windows XP Pro.
If i decide to restart XP, sometimes it hangs on startup. Then i shutdown the PC, and start it up again, then i get a menu:-
"Safe mode" "Last good know configuration" "Start windows normally"
If i were to select any one of them the PC would hang, so i can't get passed this stage, so i have to reformat. This has happened around 6 times within the last 2 months.
Someone told me to go to "System Information, Hardware, Conflicts/Sharing" and it should tell you which hardware is bugging up. My graphics card is there 3 times (GeForce 4 MX440 128MB DDR).
Could this be the problem? How can i fix it? How can i get past the meny stage?
Thanks in advanced, -Matt
(Ps- My friend gave me WinXP Pro so i dont have the proper CDs or the "Recovery CDs" as some people have told me..) |

| Check your BIOS that you have disabled conflicting hardware. e.g onboard devices which you are not using.
Also update the drivers for your hardware.
P.S there shldn't be a problem with your winxp cd. |

| Why don't you try removing everything from your computer except one hard drive, one cd and the video card mouse and keyboard. Run XP and then in Device Manager click on view and show hidden devices-remove all that are not appropriate for the existing state of the computer.
Reboot and then one at a time add your hardware-when you get the problem then it is that piece or that piece conflicting with another.
When I first installed XP when it came out I had problems and by accident found out it was my new HP 7400c scanner. I had accidently left it off when I booted and the computer worked normal. I went to HP's site and updated its firmware.
XP hates bad drivers.

| Judging by the fact that you have 'copy' from a dubious source, how do you know that isn't the problem?

I've been using Windows XP before it was even released for sale. I've had no problems up till now.
And also, would it be possible that my Graphics card is Overheating? Its a GeForce 4 MX440 128DDR, but it has a fan on, maybe there is something wrong with the fan? I've opened up one of my side panels, and for the last 2 days nothing has been wrong so far.
Just a guess.. |

| Check the fans on your PSU (Power Supply Unit). I have seen random reboots and weird behaviour as a function of a dead PSU fan.
