My boot time is very slow close to 2 minutes or more.

System Specs:
Toshiba A215-S5818 Notebook
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL60 -- 2GHz
2GB DDR2 -- 160GB Harddrive
Running Windows Vista Home Premium

I disabled a few services through services.msc -- I only disabled the extremely useless ones such as Diagnostics and some more. I have also disabled the Themes and am running on the Classic theme and I have disabled also the pretty vista effects including the fading and shadows and background etc. I am not quite sure if this had any effect on my boot time. Otherwise, this laptop is extremely slow and the music often skips when I am playing music on Windows Media Player and browsing the internet. Any ideas what may be causing my SLOW boot time and the half-a-second freezing?

Thank You in Advance :-)

-Felix

I tried many of those Tweaks (thanks a lot) including a script that gave me my reboot time. My reboot time is 279 seconds!! That sounds a bit surreal. Anyone have any idea why it takes my laptop soooooooooo long to boot up?

Try doing a Selective Startup, see if you can find whats causing your issues.
Run Selective Startup using System Configuration:

The first time I timed my re-boot, I was at 235 seconds. The tweak that helped me the most was the Speed up the shutdown time registry change. However, I've noticed that the time has increased some since I re-enabled UAC. In addition to their registry tweak I also went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and changed three keys. I changed AutoEndTasks to 1, HungAppTimeout to 1000, and WaitToKillAppTimeout to 2000. They're also located in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop.

I believe you are using the default OS loaded by Toshiba.

Normaly all the OS preloaded by the manufacturer include a lot of testware, trialware and some tools loaded automaticaly.

Try uninstall those software.

Or do a clean install of Windows Vista.

This is the step i do to Tweak Vista (U may already do it)

Enable Built-in Administrator Account

Now type the following command:

net user administrator /active:yes

1. Visual Effects
 a) Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced" tab, in the "Performance" section select "Settings". Leave only the following checked:

√ Show shadows under menus

√ Show shadows under mouse pointer
√ Show translucent selection rectangle
√ Smooth edges of screen fonts
√ Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Then select "Apply" and "OK".

2. The Paging File IF U Have 2 Physical Drive
a) From System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Virtual Memory. Then assign the paging file on each drive or move the paging file to other drive.

3. Disable Indexing Service
a) To disable the Indexing Service go into "My Computer", right-click on all your hard drive partitions one at a time, left-click "Properties". Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching". Select "Apply changes to subfolders and files". If any files cannot be updated select "Ignore All".

4. Uninstall Useless Windows Components
a) Go to add/remove programme and click Turn windows Feature On/Off to remove unnecessary windows tools

5. Reduce Recycling Bin Drive Space Usage
a) To change the Recycling Bin Size, right-click on the "Recycle Bin", left-click on "Properties", select the "Global" tab, then "Use one setting for all drives". Move the slider to "3%".

6. Disable System Restore Drive Space Usage
a) Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "System Restore" tab, Click Turn off System Restore on all drives
and select "OK".

7. Increase the Mouse Pointer Speed
a) Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Mouse", "Pointer Options" tab, under "Motion" adjust the slider 1 to 5 steps closer to "Fast". Only 1 to 3 steps is recommended. Then check "Enhance pointer precision" and select "OK".

8 Remove Unnecessary Autostart Programs

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press Enter.
  2. Go to

             HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

And

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  1. Delete those program you don’t want to start.
  2. At MSConfig No Boot GUI

10. Disable Automatic Update For Windows And Programme

1.      Windows Media Player

2.      Adobe Acrobat Reader

3.      Any other software that  auto update or auto connect to internet

11 Disable Services

a) Remove unwanted services or put it to manual start

b) In Control Panel, go to the Security Center. On the left hand side, click the "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and choose "Don't notify me and don't display the icon (not recommended)" as shown.

12 Disk Defragmenter

a) Double-click "My Computer", right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, Example: Local Disk (C, and then left-click "Properties". On the "Tools" tab, select "Defragment Now", then "Defragment

13 Regitry Tweak

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

"MenuShowDelay"="200"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]

"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

14 Remove Welcome and Login Screen

Start + R (for Run) and type 'gpedit.msc' (without quotes obviously). Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon and choose from the right 'Hide entry points for Fast User Switching' and Enable it

Go to run type “control userpasswords2”, select the user account that will auto logon. Uncehcked “ Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer
