HI,

I want to setup an ftp server on my winXP based computer and i am using the software guildftpd...

Now when i test this trough my laptop also with winXP and another ISP here in my hometown than everythings work fine as long as i put my firewall off on the laptop (the one with the ftp client)

If i try the same trough my girlsfriend computer with w98 on it than it makes no difference if the firewall is on or not... Why is that??

both computers using the same ISP and both have the same version of Zonealarm??

I also get complaints of people who want to connect to my ftp server that they receive an socket error??

What is a socket error and how to prevent this??

Thanks for any advice about this subject..

If you have a better software (preferably freeware) for setting up an ftp server, please let me know?? till now i tried Cerberus, Serv-u, raiden and now guildftpd and the only one who works abit is this guild ftpd

greetings

A windows socket is the combination of the port number and the IP address.  Are you using the default ports?

XP Pro has a FTP server built into the OS.  Just need to install it.

That's the only kind I've set up.   Most of them have been on either NT or 2000 Server for businesses but the principals are the same with XP's IIS.  In my opinion, there is nothing wrong this firewall as long as you follow all basic networking security principals.

Dedicated PC, NTFS, rename administrator account, all security updates, things like that.
