I fire up my computer and after a while the following message pops up:

Alt-F4.

Two minutes later, I get this:

Alt-F4.

I check the main panel of the "Norton Integrator", and next to Subscription Service it says: Not Installed.  And the info pane tells me I could cure this by uninstalling Norton Anti-Virus and installing it again.

Before I do anything, I wanna know if someone has had this before and if it really is a bug in Norton programs, or if it's... well... something else.

I've gotten the second one before, when my subscription ran out. With Sysworks you get antivirus updates free for a year. After that, you need to resubscribe. The second message comes up if you have AV automatically check for  updates.

The first one I dont know. I don't use Sym Firewall.

Thomas,

As far as the second message I will agree with whats posted. After I got that message, an uninstall and reinstall of Norton AV corrected the problem. As for the first, I offer this:

The windows messenger service (the service used to pass messages between networked computers as opposed to the AIM like chat client) has an open port (dont ask me which one) that can accept messages form the net. Adverts like this are broadcast to IP ranges from nextgen spammers acorss the net to these open ports. In the past disabling the messageing service can eliminate these messages.

However if you do use this service, you may want to scan your system to see what ports are open. Then try to find an application that will log traffic across these ports. The next pop up you get, search the log file and close that port to the rest of the world (if its possiable).

I know about the Messenger Service.  Why would I want to install an application when I can just stop the service?  Piece of cake....

The problem with the "Subscription Service" is fixed.  I re-installed all Norton apps.

BTW... After uninstalling NAV2002 and the likes, I first deleted a couple registry keys and then installed a copy of NAV2003 which I got like three months ago (had connection problems with it back then so went back to 2002).  Well, this is the message I got right after installing NAV2003:

Then I wanted to run NAV2003, and the following showed:

After three reboots, that message would still show whenever I tried to open NAV2003.  So I uninstalled it, installed NAV2002 again and (strangely?) all was fine.  Did the updates too.

Go figure....

I had to quit using NAV 2003 because of that too. I am not about to pay Symantec one more red cent for a program that cannot be uninstalled and re installed. I even used their RNAV2003 util. What is a separate util needed for if the program uninstalls like it should. Nuff said. Goodbye Symantec. Just IMHO folks.
