Hi,

I have vista ultimate with norton 360.

I'm not happy with norton 360, i "hear" it takes up too much space and most of it is useless, Is there better protection?

I want to change to something better i "hear" you need 2 types of protection antivirus and malware.

Can someone please tell me the best to use?.

I "think" i have just got a good antivirus = Avast pro 4.8, i have' nt installed yet.

Malware = ?

Im hoping has something to do with os overall speed.

alot of "hears/thinks" i know lol, just found this site hope someone can help me.

Generally having two or more AntiVirus programs will cause conflicts. I have seen several computers where Norton 360 [and Norton 2007, Norton 2008] caused slower operation. Sometimes the Microsoft KB899420 Hotfix helps [replaces a .dll file with a newer version].

I have uninstalled the Norton versions I mentioned and regained the speed, usually used AVG 8 and Avast! once with success.

As far as taking up space, with today's HDDs that is not a big issue but the resources consumed by the program can be a problem and can cause the slowdowns.

Very sorry for posting in wrong section thanks for moving, I did not see "windows and sercurity" lol, i will have a good read of the whole section.

I think my whole problem with choosing protection is not understanding it.

What is antivirus?

What is firewall?

What is malware?

Are these the only areas you have to cover for full protection?

Does any one product cover all aspects off protection or do you need more than one?

I am searching for knowledge just got into computers and am thinking the best place to start with tweaking and using programmes on your system is to start by knowing you have your protection setup correctly.

After some hours of sercurity searching and what its about i come to the conclusion i need to have:

antivirus protection

spyware protection

firewall protection

    Although i had norton 360 which is all in one protection, i hear lots of negative comments about it so i unistalled norton 360 then looked for a combanation of sercurity cover all areas plus a little extra heres what i got and installed:

antivirus = Avast professional 4.8

spyware = spyware doctor v6.0.0.386

firewall = windows firewall already in vista ultimate

Tuneup utilities 2008

CCleaner

Sandboxie

Just installed all now running scans and setting prefrences etc, hope this is going to be an improvement to my system allround, If anyone uses other combos or has any advice pl post.

If im completely wrong pl tell me!!!

Keep in mind that no single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new malware infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes spyware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Further, subsequent scanning after updates of a particular security product has been released may result in detection of items which had previously gone undetected by prior scans. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.
