Hello,

I'm on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Just recently I put a CD in my DVD/CD drive but it didn't autoplay or open anything, so I went in to "My Computer" and tried to open it manually, but it gave me an error message: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

I really need to listen to this audio CD for school and I have no other CD players... Also, when I go into device properties it says everything is working fine.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Goose

Try re-setting the drive in the bay, and if that doesn't work try this.

Error message when you try to use your CD drive in Windows XP: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891894

"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".

Click on Start/Run,type eventvwr then press OK.
Look in the System and Application logs for errors
Double click on these errors one at a time, the Event Properties window will open.
Check for any driver/file/service names that may relate to your issue.
If you find anything click on the button in the Event Properties window to copy the information to the clipboard.
Right click 'Paste' into a new text file and save it.
Post that info into your next reply.

Thanks for getting back to me. I tried setting the device to "PIO only" and back to "DMA if available" but that didn't change anything.

Richie: I went through the list for errors, and there must have been at least 500 of 2 specific messages over the course of a week -

Thanks for your help, but it's seeming like the problem isn't with the software... I've reinstalled the driver and done what you said, but it hasn't really changed anything... Any ideas on what to do?

Try the cd in another pc/laptop if possible.
Do you have autoplay issues with other/all cd's/dvd's,if you do try the following.

AutoPlay does not work?:

Sorry about not responding here. I just got back to this problem on my laptop and thought I'd rather continue this topic than waste your time starting a new one.

So, my computer didn't recognize my DVD/CD drive. After much pain and toil, I re-installed the driver and the drive seems to be working fine - with one glaring problem: Any DVDs I try to play don't play correctly. The audio is tin-y (metallic) and the picture is choppy also. However, this problem doesn't exist with CDs. They play just fine - no audio distortion. I've talked with a tech and he says there could be a virus messing with my RAM performance (slowing the audio/video). But I'm just unsure.

Any help would be great!

P.S. - Just as a tag on. I just started going through the ringtones I keep on my computer and playing them back to me. Occasionally the audio would do the same metallic thing, but it wasn't constant like it is with the DVD.
