I have a Word 2007 document in 4 columns across a single page. Each entry has 2-4 lines separated from the next entry down by a single blank line. I have added to this list and changed entries over the years and would like to make it easier to locate specific entries by putting the first line of each entry in alphabetical order.
When I attempt to do this however I can find no way to alphabetize the listing as I have just specified (I hope I have been clear in how I want to do it).
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Thank you

If the two lines in each entry were created by hitting the Enter key (paragraph marks as Word calls them) it will be difficult, since Word will see each line after the paragraph mark as a new entry.

If on the other hand the second line was created as a result of coming to the end of the column, then it MAY be doable.  (You could also try doing a search and replace to eliminate the paragraph marks, then narrow down the columns to re-create the two line entry format that you had.)

You may need to convert the text to table to make it happen.

I'm assuming that you know the usual procedure to alphabetize  (Home tab/paragraph/sort).

Thank you for the reply. The individual lines are ended with a CR. I have tried tables and importing to Excel and have not been satisfied with the results. So I am going to redo the list in one column. Each line will stretch across only a part of the page (short entries). I believe that way it will be easy to alphabetize the listing as each entry will be one line. There are currently 68 entries so it will take two pages but that should be no problem. I may try legal sized paper and alter the font size to see what I can come up with.

Made a copy of the list, renamed it "Test", put each entry on a separate line by editing the listing. Used the Home/Sort and now the list is in correct order and frankly, it's easier to read now. Consider this one solved.
(Too bad there does not seem to be a way to mark a post as "solved" like one of the other forums I frequent.)
