| I've been using WinRAR since it first appeared. Never had a problem with it till now. Suddenly, (and I say suddenly cause I can't trace the malfunction to any recent registry sweeping or software installation) WinRAR stopped functioning when I right click on a .rar file and select 'extract here' or any of the other available options when WinRAR is integrated in Windows shell. To try and trouble shoot the issue, I used all the techniques I learned here, like: I uninstalled WinRAR, reboot and reinstalled (thinking maybe a reg key or something went corrupt and needed to be re-registered or something similar), and nothing. WinRAR still didn't work on the right click. I could, however, launch the .exe in WinRAR's program folder, browse to a .rar file and WinRAR would work, but it wouldn't function when I right clicked on the archive. So, I took the next step. I uninstalled WinRAR, rebooted, then used RegVac to sweep the registry, rebooted and then reinstalled the software. Still, WinRAR did nothing when I right clicked on an archive and selected a function. I even went into Options/Settings and took out all the checks that integrated WinRAR into Windows shell. I right clicked a .rar file to make sure there was nothing listed for WinRAR. I then rebooted, went back into the Settings/Integration and integrated WinRAR into Windows shell. I right click, select a WinRAR function and still nothing happens. WinRAR doesn't launch or do anything.
So, I said to heck with this headache. WinRAR isn't the only archiver ever invented. So, I installed WinACE and after setup, I gave WinACE all of the WinRAR file associations. WinACE works on the right click, like WinRAR is supposed to work. However, I still have WinRAR installed and integrated into Windows shell. So, just for some willy wogs, I right click on a .rar file (which now has the WinACE ICON cause the file is associated with WinACE), and select 'WinRAR/extract here' and the bloody thing works. So, I right click on the .rar file again, select 'open with' choose WinRAR and put a check in the box that says 'always use this application...' to reassoicate .rar file with WinRAR and it only opened that one file. Whenever a .rar file is associated with WinRAR, the right click is useless. But when .rar files are associated with another archive, WinRAR will open or recompile .rar files on the right click. Why is this?
I only have the trail versions of both WinACE and WinZIP, and I really don't want to lay out the cash for another archiver when I have already paid for WinRAR. But I can't seem to get WinRAR to function on the right click when .rar files are associated with the application. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Any idea on what went wrong? Even double click on a .rar file while the file association is WinRAR yields nothing. How can I get WinRAR to work again?
I hope I was able to explain my issue in an understandable way. |
