| On the couple of occasions where I have found myself being presented with one of these Antivirus-Malware-Pop-up "Warnings", I was able to avert disaster by doing the following:
"Put down the mouse and step away from the keyboard!"
Then, immediately disconnect the modem...literally pull out the power cord from the back of the modem.
If I'm not mistaken, the pop-up itself cannot directly cause any infection.
The bad guys rely upon the user's immediate reaction of alarm and confusion, which will result in the unsuspecting user believing he must click on one of the options presented by the fake pop-up.
However, it's impossible to download any malware to your computer if you are not connected to the internet.
After I pull the plug (and confirm that I'm disconnected ) I then do a hard reboot, still without clicking on anything...just push the button.
Then, after the reboot, (still disconnected) I run all my cleaners, such as CCleaner, ATF, clean out the cache, java, prefetch, etc., and then run a scan for spyware & malware.
Using this method on two or three separate occasions, I have managed to avoid being infected by these malicious programs.
Remember...the bad guys rely on your reaction of alarm, confusion and possibly panic in an attempt to manipulate you into clicking on "Yes" or "No" or the Red "x" in an attempt to just close the window; however once you click on any of those options, chances are you will become infected.
As D i c k Tracy would say:
"Put down the mouse and step away from the keyboard."
