| Greetings Friends: We moved a computer with XP Home Edition w/SP1 installed (yes, we know that the latest version of Home Edition is XP Home Edition w/SP3). When I plugged the speakers back in, suddenly, the sound was gone. I know the speakers are not blown, cause they will make a popping noise when I turn them on or plug and unplug the jack into the audio port in the back of the tower. Yes, I'm sure it is the Audio port and not the Microphone port. I even tried the other port, just to see if maybe the OEM might have mislabeled the ports.
Here's is what I have tried to do to resolve the situation: Went into the Control Panel and made sure that everything there was set properly. I changed the settings, rebooted and went back into the control panel and configged the settings to the default. Still, no sound. I rebooted to see if that would help, and no. I then went into Device Manager and made sure there were no red X's or yellow Y's anywhere and Device Manager told me the Audio card was there, installed and everything should be working, but it wasn't. So, I uninstalled the Audio card's drivers (thinking the drivers might be corrupt), rebooted and let the Hardware Install Wizard reinstall the sound card, and still the computer wont speak or produce sound. That's about the extent of my trouble shooting skills. Oh, I did one more thing that may turn out to be the best thing I could do to get the sound working. I came here to ask the experts if they might give me a hand at getting the sound back. Good move, eh?
Yes, I will install SP2 and then SP3. In fact, the OS would be updated but I can't get them to install. I asked in the proper forum, and RickieUK gave me some good advice. I was hoping someone here could help me square my friend away with his current issues. Could someone please offer something I can do to get the sound back? |

| | Have you checked the notification area to make sure that the volume hasn't been muted? Sometimes the simplest of things get overlooked when troubleshooting. |

| Thanks for your reply, but yes, all that can be checked and controlled in the control panel (ah, so that's why it's called the 'control' panel?). ) |

| | Well, if all you did was physically move the computer and you changed no settings I would think it has to be one of the following, regardless of how many times you checked them: 1) Physical connection(s) incorrect or loose (most likely cause) 2) Sound card jarred during move and needs to be reseated (unlikely if device manager shows it's working) 3) Mute has been activated or audio was reset to very low (happens all the time) 4) AC connection required for speakers (??) 5) Speaker's damaged during move (highly unlikely) Sorry, but unless I'm missing something it's pretty much got to be one of the above.

| Thanks Allan:
It looks like this computer will never have sound. I've checked, rechecked and double checked the recheck, and still no sound. |

| Try the following:
First backup the registry by doing the following.
Click on Start>Run,copy and paste the following bold text into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.
regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may have an hour glass along side it for a minute or so.
Please be patient and continue when the hour glass disappears.
Now download/unzip RS.reg to your desktop, the file is attached below.
Double click on the unzipped RS.reg and agree to merge the information into the registry.
Then restart your pc.
If still no joy and if you have the Microsoft Windows XP installation disk.
Click Start>Run,type sfc /scannow then press Ok.
Leave a space in between sfc and /scannow
Reboot when you've done.
Note:
sfc /scannow scans all protected system files and automatically replaces any incorrect/corrupt versions with the correct Microsoft versions.
