| In WinXP right-click the My Computer item on the Start Menu and click Show on Desktop.
In WinVista it's a right-click on Computer in the Start Menu.

| If you ever change to Classic Start menu you can also do this as follows:
Either right-click on the Desktop and choose Properties or go to Start > Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab, then the "Customize Desktop..." button. Under the General Tab, if no check mark is next to the Desktop icon you want, put one there.
Click "Ok", then "Apply" and "Ok".
