| Lag, lag, lag. Its all people seem to complain about in Half-life, so I figured to do some research and find some settings that can be done in console to reduce lag, you wont see significant improvement in your ping, but it will recover faster from those dreaded "Connection Failure" red messages, and you will probably have a lower ping. My ping in half-life is anywere from 24-90. So here we go.
First off you might need the console in order to do this, create a shortcut of half-life or modify a existing shortcut by right clicking it, going to properties, and changing the target. All you have to do is add to the line - console. So for me it would look like this "C:\games\half-life\hl.exe -console"
Now to access console in game use the tilda key ~.
Now for the console commands... (this should be a complete list, if anyone knows of any other commands to help out ping, graphics, or sound please post them, I am only doing lag reducing commands)
- ambient_level 0
- cl_allowdownload 0
- cl_allowupload 0
- r_decals 0
- cl_cmdrate (Leave at 30 (or lower) for modems, set to 35-55 for Cable or DSL, 50 for LAN games.)
- cl_dlmax 0
- cl_download_ingame 0
- cl_gibcount 0
- cl_giblife 0
- cl_latency 0
- cl_lb 1
- cl_lc 1 (VERY IMPORTANT, Lag Compression)
- cl_lw 1
- cl_rate (suggested starting values: 1000-4000 modem, 5000-7000 ISDN, 6000-10000 cable/DSL, 7000-20000 T1, 20000+ LAN)
- cl_updaterate ( Lower than 12 will cause choppiness, but 15 may be great for some slow connections. Cable and DSL connections may like 30-40, unless there are too many players on the server. FOr lan games, use 50)
- pushlatency (set pushlatency (try around -1/2 to -1 times ping) -- some people say using non-integer values (like -100.0521) reduces lag [Flags: a])
- cl_allowdownload 0
And thats it, I borrowed some information from other sites, so thanks to them. I hope this enhances your game play. Happy Fragen.

I disagree with your "Cl_updaterate 101" and your rate 25000 commands, there on a case by case basis. Plus there up above with instructions on use.
cl_rate (suggested starting values: 1000-4000 modem, 5000-7000 ISDN, 6000-10000 cable/DSL, 7000-20000 T1, 20000+ LAN)

| pushlatency doesn't work for hl since the newest patch. now the best way to set your cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate are this. cl_cmdrate = your average fps, then you adjust cl_updaterate accordingly. to do so type net_graph 3 in the console and watch the loss and choke keep raising your updaterate as long as you can until u get loss or choke. a higher update rate refreshes the game faster and allows you to shoot a lot more accurately. i always leave my cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate at 100 just because you are able to tell what the netcode is doing much easier. also you should set your rate AND cl_rate at 9999. a rate of 9999 is the highest hl allows and does not cause u to lag, it only allows you to send and recieve more data at a givin time. this is 4 years of knowlage of playing tfc, and im willing to bet it is correct, i have configs i can post to improve fps as well if anyone wants them ask.
