Try MoveOnBoot: http://www.emco.is/products/move-on-boot/download.php
or
Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Hi, i would just like to set everybody's mind to rest, i.e. anyone who is reading this post, the continued presence of this ntuser file hasn't made an iota of difference to my pc's performance, as far as i can detect, and it is only my fastidiousness and the hope to bring this topic to a conclusion that has made me pursue it this far.

Hi Allan, Thanks for the links, this is what happened: ntuser turned out to be impervious to all the actions of unlocker but move on boot worked like a charm. What it did in effect however, was to delete the file in safe mode, so on reboot i found that i had lost all the tweaking that i had done (the xp desktop was back and so were all the items in the taskbar), the shortcuts to various programs that i had created were gone, and googletalk and even move on boot, could not be found in my programs list. Finally, i decided to let ntuser remain lodged in my pc for all eternity if it wanted to, and used system restore.

Important lesson for me: If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

Hi sadicote

Does the ntuser video cd movie file have a file extension like .DAT?

I am sorry, i have to revise my reply to this. When i went to tools, folder options and unchecked the 'hide known file extensions', i did find that the ntuser video cd movie file had a .dat extension. And the overwhelming vote on it is 'do not mess with ntuser.dat'.

OF COURSE you should NOT mess with the ntuser.dat file. It is the HK-Current-User hive of your registry. In the future you need to be very careful with what you are doing - we cannot see your system and have to take your explanations and descriptions at face value.

I guess i am just plain lucky to have been unscathed despite deleting it twice, once in safe mode, and then again with 'move on boot'. Thanks for the warning, and if someday, my misinterpretation of your advice lands me in trouble, not to worry, i have my Norton Ghost image as insurance. So let us experiment without fear; that's the only way a non-tech. guy like me can learn. Cheers.
