Hi all, I'm at wits end. I have been trying to reinstall xp via the 5 restore discs I have for my Gateway. The problem is that everything goes well until I get to the "Installing Devices Screen" then it hangs and never goes any further even after 30 minutes. I have installed the discs at least 5 times thinking that it may work but to no avail. What do I need to do next? There is no visible activity with the hard drive icon on the finger pad.

Is there any more info that I can provide that will help?

Purchased Gate way in '05, Pentium 4, 1 gig ram....

Thx gk

The problem my be that the restore disks are faulty or scratched. If you can get a friends Windows XP Home Install disk, You can use that and complete the install with your product key. But you may have to phone in for the activation. If you go this route then you'll have to download the drivers for the components Windows doesn't pick up.

I might add this is a laptop. I tried another install disk for a desk top and it didn't work, just locked up with no activity.

At what point did the other disk lock up? It's entirely possible you have a hardware issue with the Notebook. WinXP and WinVista are pretty good at failing an installation when they run into hardware problems.

Berton, It never got started, put the CD in and that was that.

The whole reason I did what I did "reinstall" was the hang ups and slow speed, Norton indicated on a system scan I had almost 2 million files that it did on the last an AV scan on and I got a message that the were to much file activity to perform a back up so I thought something was up.
