| Hey Gang,
I'm having an issue with my Microsoft Reculsa keyboard. Actually I think it's more a problem with my motherboard... Both my keyboard and mouse are USB. When I go to restart my computer, during boot up the computer will say "no keyboard or mouse detected". Then once we start getting to the Vista windows orb and boot screen the keyboard comes to life and works perfectly. I know this because the keyboard is back lit and it lights up as the operating systems starts to load. Why is this a problem? Because during those few precious seconds that I have to enter my BIOS my freakin' keyboard won't work! Any suggestions on a BIOS setting I'm missing? I don't think this is a Vista issue at all as it seems to me that power to the USB ports is being temporarily disrupted for some reason. Weird thing is my sleep function works perfectly and I can wake the computer from the keyboard or mouse. Now why would power be getting to the USB ports during sleep and not during a restart? Hmmmmmm..... Any help is much appreciated!!!!

| This is what's called in the BIOS "Legacy USB support".
Normally, the USB drivers are loaded with your operating system, thus making your devices work. Fortunately, most newer motherboards have Legacy support, enabling them to make the USB ports active during bootup.
If you have an older PS2 keyboard around (or from a friend) plug it into the PS2 port and boot your system. Enter the BIOS by holding the DEL key (the most common) or the F2 or what your computer maker calls for. Search each column carefully for the Legacy USB Support and enable that option. After enabling that option, press the F10 key and select YES to save the change. Your system will reboot. Let it completely bootup, then shut it down. Change back to the USB keyboard and boot it again. You should no longer see the error message and your keyboard will work during the boot process.
By the way, during sleep mode, your computer is still functioning, though in a low power state. The processor is still active, the memory is still active, the USB ports are still active, but your computer appears to be turned off. Your ports still have current flowing to them, so the keyboard will wake the computer.
One more thing to note, is that if you have an add-on USB card installed in your computer instead of the USB coming from your motherboard, I'm afraid to say that this fix will not work. It's only for USB built into the motherboard.

| I have found that in addition to the USB Legacy support in the BIOS that the mouse and keyboard have to use the upper USB ports [those that are closest to the power supply] so they get recognized at bootup. Have seen some surrounded by black paint.
