I recently uninstalled DAP ( download accelerator plus ), it told me to restart my computer, so I did. I restart, I get the missing hal.dll error...so like the problems I had before, I tried FIXMBR,FIXBOOT and bootcfg rebuild, on the boot rebuild, it said it cannot scan the disks because of a corrupt file system.

I then realized that I should try to do a Repair install using the windows xp home editin sp2 cd. I get to where you have to press R to repair an existing windows installation, but I do not get the R option and it's showing the partition that has my data on labeled as ( Unknown )..so I had to quit.

I really need help with this, because I do not want to lose my data I have on the HD.

Thanks.

Try doing a Parallel Install of the operating system [XP].
Then transfer your data over from the old installation to the new installation.
You can then delete the old install.

Microsoft's Windows XP Professional (Pro) Parallel Install step by step:
http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdparallell/indexfullpage.htm

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Parallel Install step by step:
http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/sp2installxpcdparallell/indexfullpage.htm

The other way is to fit the drive with its jumpers set to slave into another pc,and retrieve your data that way.
Then refit the drive back into the original pc,reformat the drive and do a clean install.

I done the entire slave drive thing right before I got on another computer and checked for your reply. I set the jumpers on my hard drive which were no jumpers on any of the pins as the cover of the HD indicated for the drive to be considered a slave. I inserted the drive into a second computer inside an extra bay..I locked it down, and I set the master and slave IDE cable in the right places on both HD drives..but I had 3 spare power cables from the power supply..but none would reach the bottom damaged hard drive. I unplugged the cdrom, and cd burner power cables to give me some slack so I could reach the hd with the power cable? Is that safe?, or will it damage anything??

I then booted up, I set the drives in BIOS as PATA Primary Master - the other pc's hd and PATA Primary Slave to the damaged harddrive...But for some reason, everytime I tick F10 to save an exit, it won't get passed the host pc's gateway's boot up screen...so I have to hit f2 or f10 which is boot menu and bios settings.

What have I done wrong???

Fit the drive back into the original pc and follow the instructions to perform a Parallel Install.

Okay, will I lose any of my data I have on the corrupted hard drive??

And how would I recover it into the new parellel installation??

P.S - I finally got the host computer to boot to xp, everything is running fine. I now try to copy files from the damaged hd to the host hd but it says the disk is drive e is not formatted..I don't want to format it..because I have alot of data I want to save off of it!

Does'nt sound too good i'm afraid, check through the Google search results in the link below for 'Data Recovery',maybe you'll find something that helps there:

Well, I've decided I'll just get a new hard drive.

Will my hp pavilion a705w support the 320 gb seagate ide ? and does it have 48 bit logical block addressing support?
