| My daughter has Windows XP on her computer. She called last night frantic, and not knowing what to do, or what she had done. It seems many icons on her startup menu have changed to a W, and when she tries to open various programs they all open in a Microsoft Word format, and a box is shown stating "File Conversion-Ms money.exe(or whatever program was opened) Select encoding that makes document readable. Windows O; MS-Dos O; or Other O;" Then below is shown a bunch of gibberish she can not read. Can someone please tell me how to help her change icons back to normal, and how to start all programs normally again..... so it will Mom to the rescue!!!! (Well with your help and knowledge of course :hehe .

| Welcome
Try this:
Download/unzip the .bat file thats attached below.
Double click on the unzipped .bat file to restore XP file associations back to default.
Restart your pc when you've done.

| Thank you so very much for your reply, and help. My daughter has tried this as you said, but she gets a message that says "Windows cannot open this file, Need to know what program created it." Then it allows you to choose manually or online assistance. She tried the online help but it also said the file could not be opened. Please tell me you have another idea to help. Thanks so much!

| | Yes, she was able to unzip the file. It was when she clicked on the .bat file that the problem occurred. Thanks,

| Download/unzip fix.reg which is attached below.
Then double click on the fix.reg file on your desktop and agree to merge the information into the registry, then restart your pc.
If it merged successfully, then double click on the .bat file you unzipped earlier.
