First off I have searched Google for the last few days about this issue. A lot tell you to go to the regitry and delete 'Upper and Lower Filters' but I was only able to find the 'Upper Filters' which didn't affect anythign apart from making iTunes not work!

So my problem; first off I installed Service Pack 1 for Vista. This made my computer really slow; it would take ages to open anything, so I went to System Restore and chose to Restore before I installed it. This however, lead me to the 'HAL.DLL is missing' error at the start up which would happen even in Safe Mode, it just wouldn't go past this black screen. So using the Vista disc I tried to fix the problem but this didn't work so I had to re-install Vista. Did all that got it all working again, but now my DVDRW won't read anything, which is strange as it only just read the Windows Vista Disc a couple of days ago. It spins and the light flashes but nothing; it seems to be scanning the disc, it spins up the down but nothing. Double clicking on the D drive does nothing. I have been into the Hardware Devices and says its working properly, I have tried updating the driver and this still did not work.

I remember it did this a while back but it seemed to fix its self, but its been a few days and it still dones't want to read anything. Surely it couldnt have broke as it was reading the Vista Disc not long a go!

Any help would be great!

Can you still boot to it?

Try booting up with your vista install disk.

If that does not work then your drive is prolly dead.

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista:

See if this helps:
Download/unzip and run CleanHandlers which is attached below.
Restart your pc when you've done.

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Run
Type eventvwr then press OK
Check in the System and Application logs for errors.
Double click on each error in turn, see if there are any clues present relating to the drive issue.

If still no joy,for diagnostic purposes i suggest you try the drive in another pc if possible.
