| | I'm helping a friend with her computer... Vista is new to me. First I had to correct her Word DataApp because Word was crashing on exit and cursor was disabled. Now that's fixed, I wanted to defragment her C: by right clicking to get to the properties, but found out that as soon as I click on a right click choice, windows explorer stops functioning and needs to restart, ANNOYING! Some sites say it is "shell context menu" issues but I was unable to use Shellview, then I tried downloading spybot SD but that fails to update so also fails to check for problems. I just can't seem to get ahead, any help from you would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: right-click works fine on other applications, only seems to crash for drives/folders It's not only EXPLORE that causes explorer restart, any choice among the right-click options causes it... |

| Hey there
Sorry to come back so late, I apparently forgot to turn on subscription so didn't know you had answered.
Anyway, since my original post, I've done a whole bunch of things (Hijack this, combofix, spyware blaster, panda online, kapersky online, TRUNY.com), all found on various repair threads, the one I held the most hope for was Shellview, which finally installed, after deleting a wapload of stuff and "suspicious" files designated by Panda and AVG. Every time I run Registry Repair Pro, it finds new things to repair... I've always trusted it.
Now for your method, I thought, at first, it succeeded, but the problem came back on the second try. But now I have a new problem, along with the "explorer has stopped working" after that annoying loop goes away, I'm stuck with a unclickable black command window. firstime was, darn I forgot, some kind of visual application, second time was just c:\ type command prompt, but it was only a ghost window, not clickable, title was "...stopped working"
Oh dear
This is getting me nowhere, I am so tired of this problem, it's been hacking at me for too many days!
I hope you have more suggestions |

| I was wondering, could it be a mechanical problem with her right-click button, it does act a little sticky/weird. I'm trying to figure out if there's any statistical correlation between pressing the left side, which feels like not clicking, or the right side, which produces a nasty sticky/click and causes failure... odd
Also, it seems (though statistically not sure) that all is fine on the first attempt after reboot, but not subsequent attempts, I seem to have noticed that on occasion when I worked with Shellview.
All this to say that it does not occur 100% of the time, more like 90% of the time... if that tells you anything? |

| I currently have similar problem. Whenever I right click the Drive Icon the window explorer automatically restart. With this problem we can not access the right click menu for the drive. Temporarily I just use left click on the drive icon to explore it and right click on the explored part to access the right click menu. If we have the same problem this may help you to access the right click menu (optionally), but off course it will still be better if someone will be able to solve our problem . |
