I have been asked by a friend to find out what's causing him to have a browser problem with his WiFi connection.

He can download E-Mails & update all his protection software no problem, but when he starts either Internet explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox he cannot get a web page to come up ?

He is using:

Packard Bell (Easynote) Laptop

Running Windows XP

Belkin Router (ADSL2 Modem with Wireless G-Router)

Also running Norton Internet Security 2006

Other members of the family are having no problems with their Laptop Connections
to the same router.

Any ideas..

Cheers

Having a home network myself, (wired and wireless) what I think is happening is that particular computer's network address has restrictions for particular ports, OR has an HTTP access restriction.

Each computer on the network is assigned an IP address through the DHCP of the router. Examples are 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.11 and so on. Yours may vary, of course. The router associates the computer's MAC address of the network card to a particular internal network address (192.168.1.10 for example) and that's how each computer can browse the web simultaneously in harmony.

So, on that theory, check the router's configuration settings in the access restrictions to make sure there are no restrictions for that computer in question. In my case here at home, I use DD-WRT firmware on my Linksys router, and can make as many or as few restrictions on any computer I wish. I can block P2P, chat clients, VPN, HTTP (web access) or any protocol you can think of.

If you do not know the MAC address of the machine in question, all you need to do is to make sure there are no access restrictions on ANY computer at any IP address.

If it turns out NOT to be a router issue, please check the configuration setting for the Norton Internet Security. Somewhere, there is an HTTP protocol access issue.

I would disable NIS or 'allow all internet traffic' first and see if any browsers work.
