The bootcfg command only works in the recovery console.

What are you trying to do? Get rid of the second Windows XP? bootcfg won't do that.

Boot to the XP you want to keep and then just delete the system root folder of the other installation. Make sure you choose the right one. Then click Start > Run > type: msconfig and hit Enter. On the BOOT.INI tab click the "Check All Boot Paths" button. You should get the message: "It appears that the following line in the BOOT.INI file does not refer to a valid operating system:..... Would you like to remove it from the BOOT.INI file? Yes No" click yes.

The systemroot folder is the folder Windows is installed in. Usually C:\Windows or C:\Winnt (drive letter may vary). Look around in Explorer and tell us what you've got

What choices do you get at the boot menu?

Are you actually sure that there are two installations of XP? Can you boot to both of them?

Are they on different partitions? In short give us some more details.

Also right click My Computer > properties > on the advanced tab - Startup and Recovery click the Settings button > click the Edit button next to "To edit the startup options file manually..." > this opens notepad showing the contents of the boot.ini file. Don't make any changes yet, just copy everything and post it here > close notepad and click cancel two times to close the windows.

Yes i seen that folder earlier . What i didnt see was a dup of anything but i know theres 2 os loaded because when she restarts her comp she gets a choose to choose from .   Heres what she has in the boot.ini file.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi disk rdisk partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi disk rdisk partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi disk rdisk partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

The one with the 3 in it is the one that is working properly.  Thanks a million for the help .

Looks as if there are at least three partitions and there is a Windows OS (and a Windows folder) in the first and in the third partition.

Apart...is this really the complete boot.ini? It usually looks like

..

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microso....

notice the numbers?

You said the one with the (3) is working. The other one is set as default. Does that mean Windows won't boot if you don't interfere at the boot menu.

The boot.ini for this configuration should normally look like

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
