| Ok, Apparently I had an old WinXP partial install on my system, I never noticed this, as I had XP set up to boot into XP by default, without showing me my OS choices. Recently installed vista, and during a restart last night, it kept booting into this Windows Setup by default, which by the way (i selected Vista to be default boot, in Startup and Recovery in Vista, and for some reason, it made this phantom Windows Setup, default). Anyway, I've done some research and asked a couple questions, and i can't find my answer for Vista, because there is no boot.ini and that seems to be the common way to fix this problem in the past. I've brought up bcdedit, which i used to delete my "previous version of windows" and ubuntu BCD files. but i can't find this phantom windows setup boot sector anywhere, and i have to enable the OS choices when i boot, which is quite annoying because I would prefer to just press power and go.
English is not my first language i apologize for mistakes; any help is appreciated thank you much.

| First, you can download VistaBoot Pro (http://www.vistabootpro.org/) and manage your boot options easily. Once you do that you can open Windows Explorer and look for a Windows folder that is not "complete" and if you find one, delete it.

| | Well, BootPro does a good job at dumbing down the bcdedit which is fairly simple if you know how to read, but still it's nice to have in the future. Although, i don't have any Incomplete /windows, so hence there is nothing to delete, and still on boot Windows Setup loads, and asks for my XP cd, and in my BCDEdit/BootPro there is only one boot option, and that is my Vista, Obviously it would be bad to delete. Thank you for the suggestions.. Anyone else? |

| | ok update; i did find a folder it was $_Win.NT_(random #'s)_$ i deleted it, and it did stop the Windows Setup from running when you try to boot it, BUT it still shows up on my on-boot OS List, and i can't set vista as default, well i can set vista as default boot, but if i disable the timeout for the OS Choices, it still trys to boot that phantom Windows Install, so i have to leave the timeout enabled, to be able to boot vista. Does anyone have any idea, how to remove it completely from the on-boot OS choice list, i would really like to disable the timeout for choices, so i can just turn on my pc and boot straight into vista. and as a side note, i would recommend vista boot pro as well, it is a nice program, and really does make BCDedit alot smoother, and it's great for setting up a dual boot system. it made setting up my vista/ubuntu box a lot easier. |
