Hey guys, first post!! :P
Have been messing around with Vista for a while now, and getting use to the services ect.
I FINALLY got it going somewhat fast, at least close to the speeds I was seeing in XP but, my biggest problem is the internet is so dang slow it's painful; I noticed, however, when I disabled the 'Base Filtering Engine' ("BFE") that the internet got its 'zip' back!
Only problem is now my firewall doesn't work? I'm using ZoneAlarm free and was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to this? Or maybe an alternate FW to use? I can't stand having this BFE on, especially when I KNOW the internet is so much faster with it off :P

If your using Internet Explorer 7, the Phishing Filter could be causing your computer to respond very slowly as it evaluates Web page contents. See
The Phishing Filter may slow down the PC and How to optimize or reset Internet Explorer 7.

If you have a lot of BHOs attached to Internet Explorer, you could try improving performance by disabling those which are unnecessary. Incompatible browser extensions, add-ons, spyware or malware can cause compatibility issues such as application hangs in IE7. See Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode.

OK, not using IE7. Although it is just as slow using IE7, using FireFox 2, and also Opera 7, all same results.
No spyware/malware/virus/trojan ect. either, this is a completely fresh install except for having NOD32 installed and also ZoneAlarm. If I keep the BFE enabled and use the windows firewall the internet will run just fine, it's when trying to run another Firewall that I encounter problems. It seams the BFE service only likes the Windows Firewall but, I don't. I like to know if/when an app is trying to access the net and be able to control it. The Windows Firewall lets too many apps through, although the Vista one does do a better job of keeping outsiders out :P

Thanks for the tips guys but, doesn't really get me anywhere, sorry I didn't provide more info. Let me know if there is any other info ya need.

The Base Filtering Engine (BFE) is a service that manages firewall and Internet Protocol security (IPsec) policies and implements user mode filtering.
Stopping or disabling the BFE service will significantly reduce the security of the system.
It will also result in unpredictable behavior in IPsec management and firewall applications.
The Base Filtering Engine service is required for third-party firewalls to function correctly.
