| Hi
I just bought a new laptop from Dell
It is the InspironTM 1501

The laptop out of the box is incredibly slow to run Vista. It is slow to boot and slow to open up any of the already installed applications. Looking at it there does not appear to be any fancy graphics turned on. I cannot understand why an off the shelf laptop could be so slow. There is 512MB 533MHz DDR SDRAM. I would have thought I could manage with that as the laptop is purely for checking mail via Internet Explorer. Is there any way of turning off everything (perhaps the tweak tool can) in one go and have a basic OS on it.
I would rather avoid buying more memory and am wondering if maybe there is a problem with the laptop.
Has anyone any experience with this.
Apreciate any help or suggestions.

WinVista Home Basic should be fine with 512MB but the Sempron CPU doesn't have as much L2 cache as the Turion or Intel Pentium chips and that could be a factor.
The Integrated Graphics could be an issue if it uses Shared Memory. The BIOS sets aside a portion of the System RAM for the video adapter and that leaves less for the Operating System in which case the memory upgrade would be the cheapest thing to do.
In hindsight, of the 4 on that page the Inspiron 6400 would have been a better choice for WinVista with the Turion 64 X2 a very good second choice but only because of the Integrated Video. The other 2 would have no problem with WinXP.

| Hey thanks for the reply.
I bought the first one on the left. With sempron processor.
I wanted the cheapest one there as the laptop would not get much use and only needed to be as basic model. There was no option to get the laptopn thought with XP at the time so I had to get the Vista which I did not want.
Am disapointed that they have an option to buy that laptop on their website, when in reality it is not to a high enough spec to run that Operating system.
So you think my best option is to upgrade the amount of memory ? How much would I need to upgrade to? Also I woukld be afraid that if I bought all this extra memory and it was still slow due a different problem.

| | I'm surprised anyone even sells machines with 512MB to run Vista. Upgrading memory to 1GB will show a major improvement in speed. Upgrading to 1.5GB or 2GB will show additional improvement, but not as much as the first upgrade. |

| I just got a laptop HP dv9208nr with top of the line everything or so I was told by the salesman. I have the same problem slow to boot and just slow all around. I hate the thing that you have to allow every program even my earthlink. What is with this???
