Been around the world looking for a way to tweak SP2.cab files so I can put in what I want. (firewire) Well I found it; Cabinet Manager. This was contributed by one of our kind, at the msfn.org forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=41830

It's 3 pages long, get's good on page #2, but all the links are there. I wouldn't normally cross-post forums but I think the tools & information is enough to warrant a closer look for folks who will be installing SP2 in the future. People that want drivers installed they know won't cause problems.

Give it a read, let me know if it helps out.

XP professional (not sure about home) comes with a tool to create .cab files; just run "iexpress" and choose "Create compressed files only." I'm not sure how the compression ratio compares to the third-party utilities, but it's an option for those who don't like installing redundant programs.

P.S. Thanks for the info; it seems some computers have trouble with the SP2 drivers and some don't. Anybody know why MS changed them in the first place?

Can't get any answers from the MVP's at Pcbanter.net, (newsgroup posts) the main reply is that firewire can be used to network computers. This is a security threat, so MS decided to lock it down. If you look in your network connections (and have firewire) it is now listed in SP2 as a network connection. You can even firewall your firewire.

They forgot that most folks use this ohci1394 device to hook up DV cameras & external firewire drives, oops!

I'm getting ready to give SP2 another try, so I decided, "Hey, I can't screw it up any worse than Microsoft did!," : so that's why I did the lobotomy on SP2 and replaced all SP2 firewire files, with SP1's.

I imagine that you could use this tool to correct any driver issues you have with Sp2 before the install. Time will tell.
