sorry MNO...

I posted this a few hours ago on the old forum - and you probably replied - but i never got to see it before this new shizzle came in.

My Linksys WiFi router drops me sometimes.  I upgraded the firmware and i thought that would help...but it didnt.  To fix this problem I have to unplug the modem, unplug the router, wait 5 min, plug in modem, wait for all lights green, plug in router... that gets annoying to do after a while.

i was dropped twice today.  what else can i do to fix this?

Hey Steno.

Is this easily reproducable? If so, let's try a little test to see if we can identify where the problem is coming from.

We could do a couple of things but let's look at what we know.

1. We know the computer is going offline. Do we know where?

2. The computer gets it's DHCP from the router not the modem. So with this in mind... what IP does the computer have when it goes "offline". If it still holds the IP of the router then it may be the modem popping offline. What we could do to verify this is something like the following:

Power cycle PC, Modem and Router. This is so we get a good standard connection.

Turn off any firewalls.

Ping the router. Watch for success.

Ping www.yahoo.com. Watch for success.

What we just did is verified the gateway and the ability to get past it.

Now when it drops offline perform the same test. If it fails at the router then the problem could lie with the PC, cable, or router.

If it hits the router and not the internet then it is likely the modem or that cable that is the problem.

This is not perfect and does not consider the WAN portion of the router but we'll hope that doesn't play a factor.

If you are really good and knowledgable with your router you could perform the same tests above but to get more accurate readings you could ping the default gateway of the PC (the router) and ping the default gateway of the router (your ISP) and then maybe ping yahoo.

Wow sorry for rambling.

nono- dont worry about rambling =)

the drop-outs occur randomly...but i will try your stuff

One thing I do know is that when my internet is down...when i go into the router's settings and go to the client list- i can see my comp and my sister's comp listed (theres only 2 comps...mine is wifi- hers is wired)

but when i lose service on the wifi (ex. AIM drops, i get "connection interrupted" on CS, 'page cannot be displayed' in IE) my sisters comp also loses service.  So this is not just a wifi priblem, its affecting my whole ADHOC (i think thats what they call it) lan.

i called comcast one day and the rep. said my modem was pingable and from their end- my connection looked fully operational.

ill post back w/ the ping results

Ok let's see if I can remember what I had posted. The first thing you need to know is narrow down the problem as XP Guru suggests. I would recommend bypassing your router for a day or two and see if you stay connected, if so then you know for sure it's the router (which it sounds like it is). It could also be something interfering with your signal, wifi is still very unstable in my opinion. Are you on Cable or DSL? If DSL make sure there are no halogen lights or 900mhz & 2.4ghz phones near your modem, I know these effect DSL and I would assume they could also effect your wifi router. Please keep us up to date on your progress, we will figure it out eventually. Also are you using a software firewall? If so which one?

I have Comcast cable 1500/128

(sorry for being breif on this post but i just wrote a long reply and hit the wrong button and lost it all

not just wifi prob cuz both the wifi comp and the ethernet comp get dropped

i can access the router settings from both comps when "offline" but not the internet

software firewall= NIS2002 w/ NAV

edit: i think my router has a hardware firewall...could that affect anything?

Well 9 times out of 10 if you are losing your connection it is due to a line problem. It could be your node, router(theirs), cable line itself, bad connection or bad splitter etc. This usually has to be repaired by your ISP, they may tell you that they don't see a problem on their end but just tell them that your connections drops continuosly (embellish a bit) . To give you an example, a friend of mine locally had the same problem except with a hard wired router and Cox kept telling him it was on his end. I told him they were wrong and it was what I just told you....... guess what, I was right. The cable coming from the pole to his house was bad (getting moisture in) and they replaced it and he hasn't had a problem since.
